Study Group Activities 2005-06

In January 2005, the San Juan Public Lands Center began a joint long-term planning effort to revise the San Juan National Forest and BLM land management plans. The process began with the formation of volunteer Community Study Groups that met monthly from Jan. through August 2005 to help the agencies identify changes in existing management direction and suggest new needs for the future. In southwestern Colorado, the two federal agencies work together to jointly manage San Juan Public Lands, some 2.5 million acres of public lands. The long-term management plans of both agencies are due for revision. The San Juan’s joint planning process will produce plans to guide management of these public lands for the next 10 to 15 years.

During the latter part of 2005 and early 2006, the agencies used the public input along with resource suitability analysis to shape alternatives for the plan revision. In May 2006, the Study Groups were re-convened along with an invite to the general public to review and give comment on the proposed alternatives that the agency would analyze in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).
