Bridging the Gap Between Science and Policy for Organic Aerosols: Technical Needs for Source Attribution and Air Quality Planning

for the

Organic Speciation in Atmospheric Aerosols Research Workshop

ABSTRACT

Before we can confidently step across the gap between scientific research and policy recommendations, uncertainties about the origin, atmospheric processes, and fate of atmospheric aerosols containing organic carbon must be narrowed. To this end, the aerosol research community is being called upon to focus its data collection and analysis efforts, and to improve source attribution methods. In this presentation, we will outline some of the pressing air quality policy questions in need of higher resolution data for a satisfactory resolution. We will then discuss the connections between those issues and the scientific results presented in the course of the workshop. We will conclude our presentation with recommendations for specific projects that would further narrow the uncertainties in those areas of particular importance.
