Identify Hydro-zones

A good xeriscape plan will group plants with similar water requirements together into hydro-zones. By grouping plants together you will improve watering efficiency and increase plant vitality.

Zone 1 (High Water Use Zone.)
This is the zone that requires the most attention in managing water use. The high water use zone would include the lawn area if you have one. This zone would also include shady areas around your home, areas around downspouts where drainage tends to flow, and any other areas that tend to receive more moisture than the rest of the yard. Water use in this zone can be tilted in your favor by using larger hard-scaped areas such as sidewalks and patio space that offset the higher water use of the zone.

Zone 2 (Moderate Water Use Zone)
This is the transition zone, often used to separate the high and low water use zones. In this zone it is best to use plants that need infrequent supplemental watering.

Zone 3 (Low Water Use Zone)
This is the zone where the most drought tolerant vegetation should be placed. Often this is the zone where native plants are used.
